This paper presents a study on the high performance speed control of permanent magnet synchronous motor for computerised tomography (CT). A CT system has many units on its rotary gantry, such as X-ray tube, detector, heat exchanger and data acquisition system. Therefore, to balance many components which have different weights is difficult; this is an inescapable problem in the CT systems. In this paper, to promote speed performance against eccentric load, a vector control algorithm with a load torque observer is presented. Through experimental results, it is verified that a CT drive system with a load torque observer has high performance speed regulation ability.
