Design optimization of compact bends using finite element based numerical methods

In this paper the bending loss in compact optical bends is calculated by using the finite element-based beam propagation method. The effect of radiation loss with height, index contrast and width of the rib are discussed in detail. Finally the lateral offset is applied to reduce the butt-coupling loss.
