The optimum configuration for hybrid Raman/EDFA amplification in ultra-long-distance 40 Gbit/s WDM transmission using a dispersion-flattened fibre span is investigated. By optimising the Raman gain, 16×40 Gbit/s WDM transmission over 2000 km was achieved with 80 km repeater spacing
