Reports results of the nonlinear refractive index in GaAs/AlGaAs pin diode multiple quantum well waveguides based on the quantum confined Stark shift of the exciton peaks due to a photon-induced change in the electric field. An increase in the nonlinearity can be obtained by connecting the waveguides to an external bias circuit with little or no speed penalty.
