An optical gain as high as 46.5 dB was obtained in an Er3+-doped fibre amplifier with pump power of 133 mW by a combination of broadband laser diodes at 1.48 mu m. A gain coefficient of 0.76 dB/mW for the pump and a maximum output power of +15.1 dBm (32.4 mW) have also been achieved.
