Soft decision decoding for multilevel coding (MLC) schemes using punctured convolutional codes are investigated based on the capacity rule. Three mapping strategies named Ungerboeck's (1982) set partitioning (UP), block partitioning (BP) and mixed partitioning (MP) are compared in both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. Then, a robust MLC scheme is proposed based on the capacity rule and BP strategy, and the considerable performance gains over an uncoded system are demonstrated by computer simulation. The results can present some references for the optimal criterion for multilevel coding design
