The authors present an analysis of arc interruption media, their strengths and weaknesses, and maintenance requirements. Differences in arc interruption by voltage class are also examined. The authors list some of the key elements and focus on only those elements addressed within the design of the particular device being discussed. These elements include cathode/anode action, extreme thermal agitation, moving positive ions, electrons carried by field, diffusion, recombination, and collision. The discussion on each of these items aids in an understanding of how equipment is designed, applied, and better maintained
