This paper proposes a high-performance near-video-on-demand (NVOD) system. The video pumping core of this system uses a parallel processing architecture. Concerning fault tolerance requirements, the proposed system provides a backup capability per video stream. This capability is important for a commercial NVOD system since each video stream represents a paid movie channel shared by customers. Furthermore, we propose a dynamic channel assignment scheme for using total channel resources of the NVOD system as efficiently as possible. Combined with the ADSL-based multimedia network, the proposed system can provide NVOD service for most residential and business users without elaborating on the costly deployment of new subscriber loops
