Thermally induced stresses in an optical-fiber coating

Pressure at the fiber-coating interface and stresses in the coating are computing for cooling of single-coated optical fibers. For simplicity the fiber is treated as rigid, mechanically and thermally. The largest tensile stress in the coating is found to be axial. E. Suhir's (1990) analysis is extended by removal of some errors and unnecessary inconsistencies which are quantitatively, if not qualitatively, significant. The thermal stress analysis of a single-layer coating on a relatively rigid fiber is put on a consistent plain-strain basis.<
