IEEE's 802.3z (Gigabit Ethernet) Standard will provide 1 Gb/s bandwidth with the simplicity of the Ethernet and at lower cost than other technologies of comparable speed. Maintaining sustained 1 Gb/s bandwidth poses some significant technological challenges which make Gigabit Ethernet CSMA/CD protocol (and its performance analysis) more complicated then either Ethernet or Fast Ethernet protocols. We provide detailed simulation-based analysis of the various aspects of the 802.3z performance. This analysis includes various performance measurements taken on the simulated network with different number of stations and packet sizes
