The paper highlights the techniques adopted for design optimisation of a three phase single enclosure, 145 kV class gas insulated bus duct. The design is based on extensive electrostatic field studies in three dimensions using special software. A unique feature of this design is the introduction of individual rib insulators for supporting each phase conductor, in place of the conventional single conical shaped insulator. A model bus duct has been fabricated and successfully tested for its specified dielectric duties
