The objectives are to illustrate how the turbulent transitional environment of post-apartheid South Africa complicates the strategic management of professional engineering service firms and explain the process of developing a simple management information system to extend strategic planning horizons for such firms. A practical and empirical rather than a highly theoretical approach was chosen in order to start providing South African consulting engineering firms with useful information for managing their businesses at the earliest possible date
