A compact bar code reader using pre-lens scanning by a piezoelectrically-actuated vibrating optical fibre cantilever is demonstrated. Dual numerical aperture confocal operation, based on transmission of a guided mode and reception of cladding modes, is shown to be a simple method for increasing and separating the return signal
