The economic use of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) can be reached most likely by applying it simultaneously for a spread field of different tasks. A systemic view of this problem leads to all applications for which the SMES can be used and to all components which are affected by this use. In addition to the allocation of seconds reserve power and the improvement of transient stability, a concept for securing voltage unstable states by the SMES is presented. For the whole field of tasks, a multifunctional control concept is developed which enables simultaneously the condition oriented service of the SMES purposes in all time scales. The concept for the improvement of voltage stability and the control concept are validated by case studies of a model of a real voltage critical power system
