A new type of single pole head for both reading and writing using an extremely sharpened optical fiber probe is proposed for perpendicular magnetic recording to attain ultra high areal density. For the writing head, the head field distribution was calculated by means of a finite integration element (FIM) method and it was shown that the field from head tip to the recording layer was successfully increased up to 4.8 kOe by attaching a ferrite-return-pass around the writing head probe. For a read-out head, the calculation of the magnetic transcription from the recording layer to the head tip indicated that magnetic transcription could be obtained up to 270 kfrpi
