In this paper an analytical method is proposed to study position assisted handover in a multi layer cell architecture. The performance of the proposed position-assisted algorithms in terms of first time handover probability and the mean number of handovers is evaluated and compared with the threshold only based algorithm. It has been shown that the proposed handover algorithm improves probability and accuracy of handover. This algorithm also succeeds in reducing performance dependency on the location of picocell base stations within the micro-cell coverage area. However the improvement is very much dependent on the position information certainty
