One of the performance issues that have come to light upon study of field data from deployed CDMA networks is the occurrence of call drops due to slow handoff, when crucial reverse link messages do not make it successfully to the mobile. The aim of 3G systems should certainly be to achieve call drop rates of nearly 0% and enhancements to the radio link would be necessary to achieve this. This paper attempts to illustrate the seldom addressed problem of slow handoff related call drops and suggest some possible approaches to combat this problem. One of the solutions proposed in this paper has been accepted partially for standardization for cdma2000
