Evolution of metropolitan area networks to broadband isdn

A growing market demand for high-performance data, image and video networks, coupled with advances in high-speed tech nologies@Wheightenedinterestinbroadbandnetworking. This paper describes possible broadband network architectures for metropolitan areas and wide areas (ie., country-wide and inter national). We propose an evolution to broadband which begins with broadband Me"poluan Area Networks designedfor voice and data services. The need for switching and wide area net working is discussed along with the relationship between broad band premises networks, public MAMs, and Broadband ISD)V. We discuss the IEEE and CC17T standards on which these networks are based and describe the interworking of the broad band services with existing lower-speed data services
