Design and testing of an intervertebral disc prosthesis

The primary rationale for an intervertebral disc prosthesis is to restore normal anatomical relationships while duplicating the normal lumbar spine biomechanics, thereby allowing for normal and uniform stress transfer to adjacent motion segments. The design and test requirements for such a prosthesis are summarised.
