Finite state machine brings high frequency, adaptive control to power electronics applications

The power density of converters and drives can benefit from higher operating frequencies and adaptive control methods can increase system response and stability. The functionality of the finite state machine provides an ideal platform to build a high frequency, adaptive controller for power electronics applications. This paper describes design, simulation and implementation of a finite state machine (FSM) controller for a high frequency power converter. Adaptive control methods are used to increase system performance and a comparison with traditional PID control is made. A 1.5 kW 25 kHz power converter is used as a platform for practical evaluation of the controllers.
