Compression of higher-order (N≃3) soliton pulses in standard singlemode fibre followed by compression in short dispersion decreasing fibre (DDF) can product ultra-short fundamental solitons. This design scheme uniquely enables high-quality compression of broad pulses (<30 ps) down to <142 fs over a wide input wavelength range using a remarkably short DDF (<455 m)
