The Post Mass Production Paradigm

This paper proposes a new production paradigm called the "Post Mass Production Paradigm" (PMPP) which recognizes social, natural, and environmental limitations that conflict with the proliferation of artifacts produced with mass production technologies. PMPP aims at qualitative satisfaction rather than quantitative sufficiency and advocates sustainable production by decoupling economic growth from material and energy consumption. Because PMPP aims at qualitative satisfaction with less material and energy consumption, it requires reconsidering how we design artifacts. The paper proposes a new design methodology for innovative products called soft artifacts. Examples of soft artifacts are also illustrated.
