This paper reviews protocol design and implementation of mobility management in mobile ATM networks. A mobile ATM network offers an ATM infrastructure to support ubiquitous mobile services in a common ATM backbone through a set of ATM signaling extensions. In the paper, we first discuss mobility management functions for both location management and handoff control and then we present signaling extensions necessary to realize those functions. Based on a protocol design with an integrated location management approach and an unified handoff handoff control scheme, a prototype system is designed and implemented for supporting mobility of IP terminals over mobile ATM backbone through waveLAN radio access
