Area based co-registration of two or more images is typically based on maximisation of the correlation coefficient (CC) similarity measure. The authors investigate two `nonconventional' area based similarity measures and develop a procedure for optimising their computational efficiency. The result is a computational advantage over the CC method of 2M, where M is the size of the co-registration parameter value search space. An experimental study involving radar image pairs is also included
