Describes the design and application of a SLAMSYSTEM model for an intermodal freight terminal in the rail industry. The model was built to examine various what-if questions relating to the design and operation of individual terminals within Conrail's intermodal network. An example application of the model is given to determine the feasibility of eliminating one terminal from the corporation's system and shifting the traffic volume to a remaining terminal. The study is based on current as well as forecasted future traffic volumes.
