Low cost system monitoring applied to consumer PC platforms

The benefits of service and manageability seen in the DTMF (Desktop Management Task Force) are clear in the corporate environment. This paper reviews the DTMF model for PC manageability. We show that system monitoring should also apply to the home PC segment so that systems can be serviced and managed effectively. A critical building block of manageability is the hardware system monitor. Analog Devices/sup R/ Inc. has built and designed several devices that fulfill this critical function. There are a confusing variety of solutions for the system monitor. The sub-$1000 PC demand, drives designers to cut anything not clearly required. The home PC may suffer compromised reliability in the hope that individual components can be left off system boards. Today, we present the benefits of enabling DMI (Desktop Management Interface) and POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) Internet manageability by using ADI system monitors.
