The authors analyse the introduction of a wireless link between two nodes in an ATM network for the transmission of data and multimedia services. The ATM cell structure and length are modified in the wireless link in order to operate in a satisfactory way. The adoption of error control techniques is also analysed. The performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated for wireless channels with and without memory. For memoryless channels, a theoretical analysis and computer simulations have been performed, while for channels with memory, the performance has been evaluated only through computer simulations. The results show that the proposed communication scheme is quite efficient and can permit satisfactory performance on the wireless link
