A numerical analysis of a dispersion-managed 1550 nm soliton WDM system using standard singlemode transmission fibres is presented. Detailed investigations of a 200 km long system show that high capacity (>30 Gbit/s) WDM transmission can only be realised by choosing a small average dispersion. The authors further demonstrate that in this case, “error free” transmission of 30 WDM channels over 1200 km of standard fibre at a total bit rate of 450 Gbit/s is feasible
