This paper describes a new power line carrier AMR (automatic meter reading) system which is currently being tested in several major pilot schemes. The system is believed to be unique in offering data rates of up to 19,200 bps over both LV and MV (11 kV) distribution networks. Novel, low cost, noninvasive inductive signal coupling techniques have been developed to facilitate cost-effective communications over underground and overhead MV networks. A programmable electricity meter has been developed in order to demonstrate a wide range of system benefits, including AMR, tariff and load management, tokenless prepayment, quality monitoring and load research.
