A general purpose algorithm for designing a large class of optimal (in the minimax sense) FIR linear phase 2D circularly symmetric and symmetric fan filters is presented. Formulae for estimating the minimum filter order required to achieve given design specifications are also presented. A computer program that embodies the algorithm was tested on over 400 design examples and it was always successful in obtaining the optimal results
