The authors present a multi-domain speech compression method based on a wavelet packet transform. The signals are compressed in domains with different time-frequency resolutions according to their energy distribution in these domains. It is shown that this method is simple to implement and is effective at compressing speech and audio signals, even at bit rates as low as 2 kbit/s
