The paper presents the analytical study of an alternated structure of permanent magnets. These structures are used to construct position sensors, for example. Such devices need to be optimized, and only through analytical expressions can this be done. The paper presents these analytical expressions and their use in optimization of the magnetic circuit with regard to such constraints as mechanical airgap and resolution
