A summary of articles recently published in IEEE Computer Society periodicals. The Web extra at http://youtu.be/j-VdpfUxuas is a video segment in which IEEE Computer Society President David Alan Grier discusses how one of the first things that a professional society must do is define its field. The Comptuer Society has traditionally done this, as have many socieites, by defining the educational requirements for computing professionals. It started this work in the 1970s and it used this effort to distinguish a computing professional from an electrical engineer. This kind of work remains an important part of the society and its Educational Activities Board.
