This paper presents design and implementation of a digitally controlled stand-alone photovoltaic charging system using an application specific IC MPT612 which can track the Maximum Power Point (MPP) of any Photovoltaic (PV) array. The controller functions so as to balance the power flow from the PV module to the battery and the load. The choice of the converter switching frequency and the inductor value is a compromise between converter efficiency, cost, power capability and weight. This paper also discusses the design and simulation of buck converter with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller using MATLAB-Simulink. A 600W prototype has been built and tested. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method with the excellence in tracking efficiency.
