The zero of potential

The zero of potential has been the subject of controversy in both electrocardiographic and electroencephalographic literature. In this article zero of potential is discussed in a historical context. It is noted that there is no meaningful zero of potential on a bounded, insulated volume conductor such as the body, and the effect of the reference for recording potentials on surface potential maps is discussed.
