Many reversible data hiding techniques have been presented in the literature in recent years. in this paper, a novel, reversible data hiding scheme is proposed for embedding secret data based on side-match vector quantization (SMVQ). According to the scheme, we can directly reconstruct the original SMVQ compression code for the receiver to store the cover image in a saving storage space after extracting the secret messages. as an improvement to the exiting techniques, we used a data-reading approach in which the data were divided into three categories and an ordering method was used to distinguish between the odd and even positions of the codeword. the experimental results demonstrated that the proposed scheme enhances the embedding capacity and image quality. the results also indicate that the hiding capacity of our scheme is around 24,360 bits, which is about 51% greater than that of Chang et al.'s scheme . in addition, our proposed method outperforms Chang et al.'s scheme in terms of the quality of the stego-image by approximately 0.1571 dB, on average.
