The Parallel Ocean Program (POP), one of the ocean general circulation models (OGCMS), is widely used in ocean and climate research. This paper presents the SIMD optimization performance of POP on the Intel Xeon X86_64 platform based on the Intel FORTRAN compiler. The results show that SIMD can improve the computation speed of POP, whether high or low resolutions. In the low resolution, the speedup ratio exceeds 1.5, which can be up to 1.52. With the threads increasing to 8, the speedup ratio of SIMD is decreasing to 1.34. In the high resolution, the speedup ratio decreases to 1.17 from 1.34, while the threads increase from 1 to 8. Through the experiments of different resolutions, the results show that the effect of the vertical resolution on the SIMD speedup performance is greater than that of the horizontal resolution, and with the increase of the vertical resolution, the SIMD speedup ratio is reduced.
