TCP/IP evolved from 20 years' research that sought a way to move from a telephone-style circuit-switched infrastructure to a packet-switched infrastructure. The first Web extra at is a video interview with Vint Cerf about how TCP/IP evolved from ARPANET, an earlier small-scale research network.
