Consumer electronics: The continuing quest for 3-D television: The solution lies in deceiving the eye; viewers must envision a realistic image where a planar one exists

The goal oi reproducing pictures and scenes as human eyes perceive them has eluded engineers since the days of the silent movies. The addition of a third dimension, to create life-like events, has been regarded mostly as an optics problem: To solve it, work the lenses so the eye is fooled by an optical illusion. The methods have never beengood; most have required the viewerto wear glasses with polarized lenses, which makes for an awkward setting for entertainment. Some engineers say digital electronics and real-time processing computers may change that.
