Optical disk systems emerge

The needs of television broadcasters and other communications professionals to store and then rapidly retrieve extremely large quantities of video information (e.g., text or moving pictures) are growing rapidly. However, it now appears that further large improvements in magnetic recording will be increasingly difficult to obtain. An alternative high-speed, mass-storage medium is required that is economical, compact, and archival. Random-access capability will also be necessary.
