A novel metric to assess whether the standard Gaussian approximation of a single interferer underestimates or overestimates the link bit error rate is derived. The standard Gaussian approximation is newly constructed by a nonlinear transformation. The proposed metric is a function of the interference statistics; however, it is otherwise independent of the statistics of the desired signal. A closed-form expression for the proposed metric is obtained for the Nakagami distributed interference fading amplitude. Numerical results confirming validity of the proposed metric are provided for the case of Nakagami and lognormally distributed interference fading amplitudes.
