A time-varying washout algorithm is formulated by optimal control, and incorporates a perception model that includes both the semicircular canals and the otolith models. Using a optimal control law, which is generated from the hexapod motion platform states, the matrix Riccati equation is updated in real time by the Newton-Raphson method. The new algorithm produced a motion cueing, sustaining small motion cueing for longer durations and washing out large motion cueing more quickly compared to the formerly washout algorithm. Pilot testing results show that motion cueing improved.
