In order to enhance the energy efficiency and prolong the lifetime of wireless sensor networks(WSN), we propose a new clustering-based routing protocol aimed at large-scale WSN called Grid-based Clustering Protocol (GCP), in which the given sensing fields are divided into a series of logical grid cells. Every grid, running in parallel and independent, forms a cluster. Not only the residual energy but also the location information of nodes are introduced while selecting the cluster head (CH),and the data are delivered to the base station by CH-to-CH routing. Simulations show that the GCP yields an improvement in prolonging system lifetime and saving energy.
