Concepts relating to flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) are gaining popularity for enhancing the power transfer limits as well as the stability characteristics of power systems. The authors present an overview of FACTS devices and associated nonlinear, modern control strategies. Simulation results based on the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) are presented for dynamic brakes, devices for rapid adjustment of network impedance, and subsynchronous resonance (SSR) phenomena. Emphasis is placed on power systems with geographically concentrated generation and load centers, long transmission lines, and potential for loop flow. While these are characteristics of the Western North American Power System (WNAPS), the concepts presented can readily be applied to the power system in Southern Africa
