Voltage fluctuation of grid connected wind turbines (WTs) raises certain restriction for wind power penetration levels. In this paper, a flicker mitigation algorithm is proposed for doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based WTs. The mitigation algorithm is based on tuning the DFIG power factor according to the equivalent grid impedance seen at the point of common coupling. The proposed algorithm considers an optimal reactive current flow strategy to minimize the total losses in the DFIG scheme. The modeling of the DFIG-based wind turbine along with its control scheme is designed in Matlab/Simulink environment. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm minimizes the flicker emission and reduces DFIG losses.
