This paper presents fuzzy controlled SMES for improvement of transient stability of power systems. The fuzzy logic controller for SMES have been developed for single machine connected to infinite bus (SMIB). Based on the transient stability investigations carried out on SMIB for diverse loading conditions and different critical fault clearing times, a comparison of performance of proportional type SMES (P-SMES) and fuzzy logic based SMES (FLSMES) is presented. Minimum integral squared error (ISE) criteria was used to evaluate the performance of the two types of control for SMES. The results established superior performance of the fuzzy controlled SMES in damping transient swings over P-SMES control.
