This paper proposes a fuzzy-based method to control the reactive power of DFIG-based wind turbines. Two fuzzy controllers are proposed and implemented to directly regulate the Idr signal. The first controller uses the error signal and its derivative as the fuzzy input variables while the second controllers utilizes the error and the integral of the error as the fuzzy input variables. The outputs of the two controllers are added to generate the d-component of reference current Idr in the d-q frame. The fuzzy approach is implemented in Matlab/Simulink and its performance is compared with the conventional PI controllers. It is observed that the proposed fuzzy technique exhibits excellent steady state behaviors and faster transient responses as compared to the PI controller. In addition, the proposed fuzzy controller has simpler structure, requires less hardware and is easier to implement.
