A novel facial expression recognition approach based on 2DLDA and PSO is proposed in this paper. The multiresolution and multidirectional Contourlet transform is first adopted to decrease the data of expression images and extract frequency and direction elements which are beneficial to FER. Then the 2DLDA is used to extract expression features in order to reduce the dimensions of feature space. Finally, the PSO algorithm is used to optimize the features obtained. Moreover, the impact of iterations of PSO on recognition rate is researched based on the JAFEE database. Experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper is more robust and obtains higher accuracy.
