This paper addresses the issue of the appropriate treatment and placement of both measurement theory and practical instrumentation matters within the contemporary engineering curriculum. From the nature of modern I & M practice and the realities of competition for curriculum space in any modern engineering degree, it is concluded (i) that I & M should no longer be treated primarily as a “basic” discipline which is presented in the early years of the course; but rather (ii) that in the 21st century I & M matters should be treated primarily at an advanced level
