We have proposed a novel scheme to reduce high peak to average power ratio in an optical orthogonal frequency division multiple access-based passive optical network (OFDMA-PON) system, using the combination technique of data clipping and additional phases (APs). The fixed and the random APs between 0 and 2π are inserted into the subcarriers to redistribute their initial electrical phase distribution and prevent different subcarriers from adding in-phase before data clipping. The results show that the proposed scheme can achieve a significantly improved performance compared with the traditional optical OFDMA-PON system. Moreover, this scheme can be operated easily and provide the implementation of a cost-effective optical OFDMA-PON system.
